about

Performed, recorded and mixed Saturday 28 September 1996 at Pathway Studios London. Released on Ultra Recordings London, early 1997 All songs: (copyright) Pete Bennett, Jan Noble, Darren Searles. (Guitar/Drums/Bass respectively). D.A. McDonnell plays harmonica on track 1,7 & 10. Production: John Robb. Engineer: Justin Underhill. Artwork Concept: Monkey Island. Cover Design: Jan Noble. Artwork Coordination: Giraffe
The band had been asked by Nigel Adams of Butchers Wig Records to record one song (D.A.'s Theme) for his Gone Got Wretched E.P. but carried on playing and recorded all the songs in one straight 13 hour session, including final mixing. The album was recorded live with final vocals overdubbed in a second take - mostly first takes - direct to 8 track half inch tape and mastered to DAT with no recourse to remix. The CD was mastered from the DAT. As with all Monkey Island songs, lyrics were written by both lead singers Pete Bennett and Jan Noble and sung by the authors.
The first half up to The President was our set of that time, The rest are old set songs or new ideas we worked up as we had a notion that if it went well we might as well do a whole album with the studio time.

The album was self released on the bands own label and got great reviews, 5 fists in Metal Hammer notably. BBC Radio 1 said it was 'too punk' for mainstream airplay. John Peel, John Kennedy (XFM) and Gary Crowley, plus host of regional Radio DJs, thought otherwise, thankfully.

Monkey Island did their own press, radio plugging and pretty much everything else, and had a legendary fanzine list they'd stolen off several of the press agents who often courted them, they were reviewed in these important publications- and also in the MM and NME.
